PM Patricia Young
United Kingdom
"Historic Handover: Part One"
25th May 2014
------------------------------------
"Young wins Tory election"
Patricia Young has been elected as the new Conservative leader by a margin
of more than three to one over rival contender Steven Mason.
The 46-year-old beat Mr Mason by 134,446 votes to 41,398 in a postal ballot
of Tory members across the UK.
The current Home Secretary, an MP for twelve years, said the Tories must
continue the work of the Brandt government and be in tune with today's
Britain with a "modern compassionate Conservatism".
Her defeated rival, Mr Mason, said the leadership contest had been a signal
of Conservative unity in uncertain times.
He hailed Ms Young as the perfect candidate to take the reigns from Dennis
Brandt following his resignation, saying that the race had made the party
and government look thoughtful and mature.
The result ends a four-week wait. Outgoing leader and Prime Minister Dennis
Brandt said he was quitting after April's local elections following a severe
heart condition and two heart attacks.
Sir Jonathon Spence, chairperson of the committee of Tory backbenchers,
declared the election result at the Royal Academy in London.
Party members were balloted weeks ago ahead of a series of televised debates
and private hustings.
Ms Young, 46, began the contest as the bookmakers' favourite and did not
disappoint. Her passionate, hard line speech at the Conservative annual
conference in Birmingham was well received, dealing what turned out to be a
fatal blow to Mr Mason's second challenge for the leadership,
No change
As she celebrated victory, Ms Young said her party now had to continue the
fantastic work of the former Prime Minister's government.
She said she was "fed up with the squabble of modern British politics" and
vowed to lead the government with a firm hand and an open ear. Her apparent
no-nonsense approach, particularly in uncertain times with action in the
Middle East, won her many supporters.
The new Prime Minister has often been likened with the iconic Tory figure,
Baroness Thatcher, most noticeably for being a Tory woman, but also for her
passionate speeches and grassroots conservatism. Her soft English accent
adds credence to the comparison, but Ms Young has been quick to dispense
with the likeness, famously declaring during the election "I am a Young, not
a Thatcher rite."
Attention now falls to the Prime Ministers' first government, widely
expected
to encompass many faces from Mr Brandt's cabinet. Ms Young was a close ally
of the Prime Minister, and it is not expected to mark any u-turns in current
Conservative policy.
She set out core challenges for her leadership in a victory speech at the
Royal Academy: creating economic reforms; reforming the benefit system and
getting more people into work; giving freedom to those on the frontline in
public services; as well as pledging national and international security.
She also pledged more funding for the overstretched and under funded
armed forces that have to "do a difficult job in uncertain times". Ms Young
is also expected to take a tough line on crime, preferring harsher jail
terms and a zero tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour. She is though,
a supporter of rehabilitation, particularly for young offenders.
On foreign policy, the new PM is expected to continue the re building of US
relations, as well as try to work more closely with European allies. The PM
is said to not be keen however on further EU integration.
BBC political editor Stephen Gleeson said Ms Young's victory showed Tories
were "harbouring a strong leader, someone people have perceived to be a
tough conservative in difficult political times across the globe. This
was more an election of character, than policies".
Ms Young will be expected to form her government tomorrow after a meeting
with the Queen in the morning.
