Ethiopia: Recognising Somaliland
Prime Minister Zalalew Wami
16th October 2006

"So, you're going through with it, then," said Taytu, after she had hugged
Wami and given her cousin the customary kiss on the cheek.

He nodded. "I'm going through with it. From tomorrow, Ethiopia fully
recognises the Republic of Somaliland as an independent State."

They were standing on the balcony at the Wami family villa on the outskirts
of Addis Ababa. The sun was low in the sky and evening was settling over
the city.

"And," Taytu said, "You have another ally in the Horn of Africa, one would
think."

Wami shrugged. "That hasn't escaped my attention. Eritrea is backing the
UIC, and Sudan is sympathetic. With Somaliland on our side there is
something more of a balance." He put his arm around her shoulders. "But it
isn't just that. Somaliland is a democratic, free, stable nation. It
deserves to be recognised as what it is: Independent. Only politicking
prevents it being that way."

"The West is scared of change," Taytu said. "That's always the way of
things. But now more African nations will follow your lead, I feel."

Wami nodded. "I hope so. Anyway," he looked to the East at the setting sun.
"I long ago decided that, when I'm at home, work can wait. Let's eat."

ACTIONS

1 - Recognise the Republic of Somaliland as an independent State.

2 - Begin diplomatic relations with the Somaliland government and send a
personal letter to the President, Dahir Riyale Kahin. Establish an embassy
in the capital, Hargeisa, and invite Somaliland to do the same in Addis
Ababa.

3 - Raise the issue at the UN General Assembly and the AU.
