"Back to Business"
9 October 2006
Pres. John Williams
USA
====================
After the press briefing, POTUS gave his wife a quick kiss, then
headed down to the Situation Room.
After a round of applause from everybody there (including his national
security team and the Joint Chiefs), a grinning Williams raised a
hand. "Thanks, everybody. But we still have a world to keep safe."
"First up: Saudi."
"Basically stable, sir," noted the watch officer for the Mideast.
"OK, North Korea."
"We have confirmation on the nuclear test...Well, seismic confirmation
from USGS, anyway. It'll take 72 hours for confirmation in regards to
radioactive release."
A nod from POTUS. "OK. General Pace, your recommendation in regards to
USFK?"
"Keep them at normal readiness. There's nothing, really, we can do in
that regard."
"Whaddabout the KRF?"
"There are possibilities. We'd be breaking the Armistice massively by
deploying SOF to support them, though."
"What if we merely supplied weapons?"
"That should be easier."
Much debate ensued. State and CIA were opposed. Defense figured it
could do the job. The other members of the NSC were split evenly.
Finally, Williams spoke.
"May God have mercy upon us, because I am deciding to give this
mission a YELLOW light. All agencies of the United States Government
are directed to begin coordinated planning for the covert supply of
the Korean Resistance Front.
"*However*, before we give this a green light and actually begin
supplying weapons, I want to know more from the Japanese as far as how
they plan on actually supplying weapons.
"Also, Secretary Rice, Secretary Rumsfeld, start making phone calls to
Seoul. If we could get the ROK's SOF in on the coordination and
planning of this, if not the actual activities, it would be helpful.
If they'll ante up for the actual jobs, even better. I'll also be
making calls."
Nods from all.
"With that said, I'll be upstairs. Buzz me if *anything* comes
through."
---
Actions:
1. US will support *covert* supply of the KRF. However, we'd like to
know more from the Japanese as to how they plan to do it.
2. All USG agencies directed to give what help they can to this effort.
3. Secretaries Rice and Rumsfeld to try and lobby the ROK to help out.
Williams will be lobbying, as well.
