Chris,

I’m writing to invite you to Ottawa to discuss a number of key issues that 
concern our two countries and to let you know that you have Canada’s full 
support in your Darfur efforts. My military advisors are working out just 
how many men Canada can commit at this time but current projections suggest 
we can easily match the German commitment of 500 troops and I am personally 
looking to double that. As well foreign affairs will be looking at putting 
together an aid package for Darfur as well.

Anyhow, the meeting, my ideal agenda would be to discuss the softwood lumber 
dispute, the resigning of our NORAD agreement as well as border security and 
trade. I know that the Bush Administration and the Martin Government didn’t 
always see eye to eye and I’m hoping we can come to a better understanding 
than our predecessors did. The Iraq Conference certainly seemed to show we 
have that opportunity and I hope that if successful this meeting will bring 
us closer to realizing it. I look forward to your reply.
